Edge Deterioration

Edge deterioration usually occurs when there is no retaining wall against the driveway. Water saturates the adjacent ground, and pressure on the driveway causes pieces of asphalt to ‘break off’.


Cluster Cracks

Cluster cracks have various causes. In most cases, the underground saturation has created a weak spot under the driveway, and the driveway has collapsed onto itself. While there are ‘Do-It-Yourself’ remedies, for best results you should contact an expert. Our specialists will repair your cluster cracks using infrared repair followed by the installation of new asphalt.

Surface Cracks

Surface cracks are generally not even cracks. They do not penetrate the structure of the driveway, and are usually formed by cracks in the sealcoat. Small cracks form in the sealcoat layer, and water channels through these cracks. Over time, the water widens the crack, and washes away bits of sealer and asphalt, giving it the appearance in the picture.


Structural Cracks

Structural cracks are cracks that penetrate the surface of the asphalt, and may continue on to the base materials below the asphalt layer. They may tend to collect debris, or have a lot of grass or weeds growing in them as well. A good rule of thumb for determining if a structural crack is suitable for this type of repair is to measure the crack as it must be a minimum of 3/8 of an inch wide and 3/8 of an inch deep. The crack needs to have adequate walls and depth to hold the crack repair material in place. If the crack is not large enough, the crack repair materials may come loose and out of the crack with either tire or foot traffic. The estimator will let you know if your cracks are good candidates for repair.

Large Structural Cracks

At Driveway Armor, we will use the ‘Cold Patch’ method on cracks that are too large or too wide for traditional crack repair methods. This ensures the longevity of the repair.

This crack is wider than what can normally be repaired by traditional methods. The estimator will evaluate your cracks on a case-by-case basis to determine if your crack will require this service.

After the loose debris has been removed, cold patch is placed in the crack and tamped down. The material will fill the crack almost to the top, or marginally below. This will ensure that the patch is not removed by vehicles or equipment.

As you can see, there is a textural difference. However, this method is best suited for larger cracks, as it provides the best protection against water, chemicals, and other elements. This type of service is generally done several days before the sealcoat service to all the patch material time to cure.
